Smarty Jones Update – PA Bred Day at the Races

A Labor Day card with big races here as well as in Uruguay, so let’s get to the action

Reprinted from the Smarty Jones FB Page

Dreams Untold (2017 gelding, Smarty Jones – Shootforthestars by Seattle Slew) got things started in a non-stakes event with an easy 3-length win in PA-bred allowance company. Confidently ridden throughout by regular jockey Frankie Pennington, Dreams Untold stalked just back of the early leaders while racing outside of runners. When asked, Dream Untold responded to take the lead at the top of the stretch and drew away late for the win. For Dreams Untold, trained by John Servis for Patricia Chapman’s Someday Farm, this was his third career win, all of which have come this year, in six overall starts. Dream Untold’s earnings today pushed him past the $100,000 earnings threshold now with $110,400 in the bank. A member of “Smarty royalty,” as a full-brother to several others by Smarty Jones out of Shootforthestars, Dreams Untold is the fifth of this family to enter the $100,000 earnings club, joining Centralinteligence ($309,171), Nasa ($263,024), Kendricks ($154,183) and Champion Color ($143,093). Other notable members of this “royal” family include: Cash Finance (debut winner with earnings of $72,108 in 15 starts, all in Italy), Keefer (debut winner with earnings of $54,642 in 16 career starts, and Sky Wise (earnings of $24,480 in six career starts). Future stars could include 2YO filly Sail Above and an un-named 2020 filly.
Later at Parx, Multiple Stakes Winner Someday Jones (2013 horse, Smarty Jones – Last Toots by Concern) faced off against six others in the $80,000 Storm Cat Stakes for PA-breds. Saving ground with a rail trip throughout, Someday Jones raced covered up inside of runners into the turn before being asked for his run. Someday Jones closed on the leader late but that one had more left in the tank and Someday Jones had to settle for 2nd place beaten just over 2 lengths.
Still later at Parx, Smarty’s top 3YO from last year, Graded Stakes Placed Ujjayi (2016 filly, Smarty Jones – Ocean Road by War Front), went in the $80,000 Mrs. Penny Stakes for PA-breds on the turf. Stalking mid-pack early on just back of the lead group, Ujjayi moved closer on the backstretch but, eventually, was unable to stick with these at this level and ended up fading to be 9th in the field of eleven.
Earlier in the day, Stakes Winner Illinois-URU (2013 horse, Smarty Jones – Purjehy-BRZ by Pleasant Variety) went in the Handicap Preferencial “Centro Comercial e Industrial de LP” at Hipódromo Las Piedras in Uruguay. Racing just back of the leaders throughout, Illinois looked to have chance to advance in the stretch but he leveled off late and ended up 4th.

1 Cherokee Jones edges out a rival to hold 3rd place

Three Smarties, Cherokee Jones-URU (2014 horse, Smarty Jones – Fantastic Votes by Cherokee Run) and Afilado-URU (2014 horse, Smarty Jones – Anestesia-URU by Mr. Alleva-ARG) and Helmuth-URU(2012 horse, Smarty Jones – Lilac Dream-BRZ by Vuarnet-BRZ) went head-to-head-to-head a little later on at Las Piedras. Cherokee Jones and Helmuth were one-two early on before Helmuth gave way. Cherokee Jones led the field into the stretch but was soon passed by a pair of closers. Cherokee Jones dug in to hold off a fast closing rival to get 3rd place.
