Melissa Davis began riding when she was 5 years old at a local lesson barn in Chapel Hill. She grew up riding many types of horses over the years and helping around the farm any chance she could get. “Missy” was her nickname given by her first instructor, Dana, who played a huge influence in Missy’s career. She was a confident and brave rider at a young age and became the guinea pig for any new horse, always determined to become a better rider each day. At age 12 she got her first horse, Twister, and worked at the barn in order to help pay for him. She spent hours taking care of the horses, assisting in lessons and riding. The barn bred Morgan horses and had anywhere from 15-25 horses so Missy gained a lot of hands on knowledge in medical care and experience working with vets and farriers. As Missy grew older she started teaching lessons and helping back the young horses where she found her passion for teaching and training. She went on to manage a large lesson barn and summer camp before opening Double Take Stables.
Missy opened Double Take Stables in 2012, originally just teaching a few riders and taking in project horses. This later expanded to a full service barn which offers lessons, boarding, training and showing. Missy is the main caretaker for all the horses and enjoys building a bond with each horse and rider she meets. She loves to teach riders of all ages with her main goal being to help them achieve their goals and become a better, more confident and successful rider.
Most of training at Double Take Stables is focused on hunter/jumpers and some low level eventing. Missy competes on the local jumper circuit and takes students to hunter/jumper schooling and rated jumper shows around the area. A majority of the horses at Double Take Stables are OTTBs. The farm typically brings in severak OTTBs each year to work with and many advanced riders are given the opportunity to have a “project horse” and help with its retraining.
Double Take Stables has 32 acres of gorgeous grass pastures with plenty of shelters, a large jump field, round pen and miles of trails, and offers retirement board, pasture board, full board, training board, consignment, lessons and leasing.
