DeMasi Barn Hat Trick With an Almost Grand Slam

by Dani Gibson

The new decade has the Kathleen DeMasi barn on a roll! January 27th was an extra special day, with the DeMasi team capturing 3 wins and a very close second here at their home track at Parx Racing. Trainer Kate said, “Anytime we win it’s a total team effort! …The owners who won today have been with me for a long time and have put a lot in the game, so this is really gratifying to see them enjoying the success!”

Klingon Warrior was the first of the five DeMasi runners to cross the wire first in a $12,500 claiming race going 6 furlongs and winning by 3 3/4 lengths. Parx Racing Hall of Fame jockey Kendrick Carmouche was up for owners Pewter Stable and Sardello Racing Stable. Next was a 6 furlong Maiden Special Weight with first-time starter Cinabunny. The 3-year-old chestnut filly by Golden Lad won by a head with jockey Angel Rodriguez for owner/breeder Mark Sitlinger from Shooting Star Stable. This win was an extra special one; Cinabunny is from Golden Lad’s first crop and stands at Northview.  Northview Stallion Station’s bloodstock manager Paul O’Loughlin was there and said he always thought she was a special filly. Kate replied: “It’s so great for Mark who has invested so much with being the breeder. It’s like getting to see your kid graduate.”

The hat trick was won with a little but mighty chestnut gelding Shane’s Jewel. He got up to win by a neck in the $25,000 Claiming race going 6 1/2 furlongs for owners Pewter, Kasey K Racing Stable LLC and Final Turn Racing Stable LLC with Eclipse Award-winning jockey Kyle Frey.

The excitement didn’t stop there for these connections who just missed with Worth His Salt by a neck with his close second with seven-time Parx leading rider Frankie Pennington almost clinching a grand slam! Kate said, “Having the wins with 3 different jockeys who have done well for us was great and they rode their races perfectly.”

“These big days are for the team!” Kate reiterates as she credits all the different jobs that go into keeping a large barn going. In 2020, with 39 starts, DeMasi has 7 wins, 9 seconds and 6 thirds with earnings of $180,846 an 18% win percentage and 56% hitting the board.
