Joseph E. Asbell

Biography: Joseph Asbell was a well-known New Jersey attorney who fell in love with horse racing. He was in the military and participated in World War II.
Asbell’s racing stable included all types of horses, from claimers to stakes horses. He owned the stakes-placed Tsuzomin and also had Rhyad, who was briefly on the Kentucky Derby trail in the spring of 2009. A filly named Salori won three open races for Asbell, including two allowance races, after he purchased the daughter of Grand Slam as a two-year-old in training.
The biggest year of his career in the sport came in 2008, when his horses won over $700,000 and finished on the board in more than 50% of their starts. Most of his horses were trained by current Parx Racing Hall of Fame member Philip Aristone.
Asbell passed away on October 17, 2010 at the age of 85.
