Biography: Jake Nied, Jr. left home near Atlantic City as a teenager, and spent nine years galloping horses for top trainers before riding his first race. Nied gives much of the credit for his success to trainers like Goose Heimer, Bob Camac, Larry Jennings, and most of all, W. R. “Billy” Prickett.
“They taught me that riding horses was not just about sitting on their backs,” he said. “I like to remember all the old time trainers who taught me the right way to do things.”
His mounts included Belmont S. competitor King Celebrity, Prickett’s Al Battah, and Camac’s Cagey Exuberance, and Heimer’s Clock’s Secret, who defeated both Mom’s Command and Lady’s Secret. At 61 years old, he is into power lifting and body building, and works as a personal trainer at 54 Fitness in Hammonton, NJ, a gym he helped build five years ago.
