The PTHA is proud to offer health benefits and pension plans to its horsemen, making Parx Racing one of the few racetracks in the country to provide such benefits.

When a trainer is a member in good standing of the PTHA and has started 20 times at Parx Racing in the current and/or previous calendar year and a minimum of 65% of the starts in the current or previous calendar year were at Parx Racing, said trainer and dependents are eligible; or if a trainer has a full barn said trainer is eligible; or if a trainer has made a minimum of 100 starts at Parx Racing in the current or previous calendar year said trainer is eligible for insurance benefits. If a trainer gives up a trainer’s license to become a stable employee, said former trainer will be covered for six months until eligible for benefits under the PTHA Benefit Trust as a stable employee as long as the former trainer is employed full time for an eligible trainer.[/accordion]
[accordion title=”Trainer Pensions”]
Effective January 1, 2009 the following will be in effect: Trainers stabling and/or participating at Parx Racing that have a minimum of 20 starts (65% of the yearly total of starts must have been at Parx Racing), or have had at least 100 starts, or who occupy an entire barn (have complete control over the barn) will be eligible for this retirement plan.
Trainers that are currently racing at Parx Racing and are eligible as noted above will receive an amount per start as determined by the PTHA Board of Directors for their yearly contribution. In an attempt to ensure that the senior trainers age 55 and older have an opportunity to accumulate a sufficient retirement by age 65, an additional amount per start as determined by the PTHA Board of Directors will be credited to their account. On an annual basis, the per start amounts will be reviewed by the PTHA Board of Directors to determine future amounts based on fund availability.
In order to collect retirement benefits the trainers must 1) be at least 65 years old, or 2) disabled as defined by Social Security or 3) have died.[/accordion]
[accordion title=”Stable Employee Health Care”]
Eligible individuals are full time employees of trainers who are on said trainer’s employee registration list in the PTHA office at Parx Racing and who are currently licensed as a stable employee or assistant trainer, in good standing by the Pennsylvania State Horse Racing Commission, provided said individuals comply with the specific eligibility requirements as stated below.
When a stable employee is currently validated at Parx Racing, employed FULL TIME by a PTHA member trainer in good standing, is on said trainer’s employee registration form (located in the PTHA office), licensed as a stable employee and has been so employed for the previous six (6) months, the employee is eligible for benefits of this Benefit Trust.
Payroll records must be presented upon request prior to benefits being approved. If a stable employee receives a suspension or is unable to work due to illness or a non work-related accident and returns to Parx Racing to work when able to do so, then the time away will be considered involuntary. However, if after the absence a job is taken at another location, when the stable employee returns to Parx Racing the time away will be considered voluntary and benefits will be lost and eligibility must be reestablished. If bills are incurred during an involuntary absence the invoices will be considered for payment upon return to work FULL TIME at Parx Racing. If said employee relinquishes a stable employee license to obtain a trainer’s license, only the employee will be covered for six months or until eligible under the trainers’ 20 start rule, whichever comes first.
Any medical costs not exceeding $3,000.00 per individual per year will be paid for illness and/or treatment of non-self-inflicted injuries or voluntary conditions. Examples of conditions not covered: alcohol and/or drug dependency; mental disorders; cosmetic surgery; sterilization; and injuries incurred as a result of altercations (regardless of aggressor) or injuries sustained that should be covered under your trainer’s workmen’s compensation insurance.
All requests for benefits shall be made on Benefit Trust forms obtained in the PTHA office and must be filed with the PTHA Benefit Trust prior to receiving treatment and/or admission to a medical facility, except in emergency cases. The trainer upon whose employee registration list and Security Badge List the claimant is recorded must verify the request and sign the request form indicating the individual is a full time employee, not freelance or part-time.
All payments will be made directly to hospitals, physicians, or whoever has provided the eligible services. If other health care coverage is available the Benefit Trust will only pay that portion not specifically covered and only within the limits of these guidelines. The Benefit Trust is NOT insurance and is never considered primary coverage. Reimbursements to claimants will only be made for emergency cases wherein providers demand payment and only if submitted within 90 days of the incident. Maximum coverage is per individual per calendar year. No pre-existing conditions will be covered. Coverage is limited to the availability of Benefit Trust funds and to the limits set forth. Under no circumstances will workmen’s compensation cases be covered.
DENTAL – Maximum coverage $1,000.00 per individual per year.
OPTICAL – Maximum coverage $300.00 per individual per year.
CHIROPRACTIC – Included as medical.
PRESCRIPTIONS – Maximum coverage $500.00 per individual per year.
DEATH BENEFIT – Maximum coverage $2,500.00 is for burial only, and upon approval by the Board of Trustees.[/accordion]

When a person is currently licensed and validated at Parx Racing and is retained FULL TIME by a PTHA/HPA division as an intricate piece of their respective businesses (key employee) the employee and dependents will be eligible for coverage under the plans.
The subscribers’ and their dependents’ coverage will be paid by the PTHA.
All premium payments will be made by the PRDF directly to those insurance companies providing coverage for the eligible coverage, i.e., health insurance, supplemental health insurance, accident insurance, optical/vision insurance, dental insurance and a death benefit of $5,000.[/accordion]
