Earlier this month, hackers attacked our health insurance carrier, Anthem, Inc., which is the parent company of Independence Blue Cross. Anthem is one of the largest health insurance companies in the nation, meaning that this cyber attack is a massive issue that has affected millions of citizens throughout the United States.
On February 4th, Anthem released a statement regarding the breach, stating that many of its customers have seen crucial personal information stolen, including names, birth dates, addresses, and Social Security numbers. As of right now, the evidence appears to show that the hackers did not gain access to medical history. It is important to note that not only current, but also former members, may have been victimized by this cyber attack.
Anthem will individually notify each member whose personal information was stored on the specific database that was breached. In addition, Anthem will provide complimentary credit monitoring and identity protection services. However, do not sign up for free identity theft protection via an email, as there is now an additional scam being attempted by the perpetrators (). The hackers are also attempting to trick customers by phone. All members who are affected will receive a notice via USPS mail with more details as well as how to sign up for the protection services.
