Biography: Panamanian-born Jorge Tejeira was in the upper echelon of jockeys in the United States in the latter quarter of the twentieth century. Known for being a quiet and reserved rider, he was also exceptionally astute in the saddle. His graded stakes victories included Grade 1 wins aboard Mississippi Mud in the Matchmaker Stakes, Royal Glint in the Santa Anita Handicap and Love Street in the Sorority Stakes.

Tejeira captured the first two runnings of the Grade 3 Whitemarsh Handicap at Keystone Race Track aboard Naples and Mississippi Mud. In 1976, he tied a longstanding North American record for total wins in a single day when he guided eight horses to victory – three at Keystone during the day and five at Atlantic City Race Course in the evening.

At Keystone/Philadelphia Park, Tejeira was regularly at the top of the jockey standings and was crowned Leading Rider five times (before 1996 the titles were broken down into seasonal meets): 1975 summer meet, 1976 summer meet, 1976 fall/winter meet, 1977 fall/winter meet, and 1980 fall meet. In his 1976 summer meet title, Tejeira set a record of 172 victories – the highest total of any seasonal meet in the history of the track.
